Questions to RESEARCH!

  • Population Break Down: Understand the population with a specific eye towards the age composition.

 

  • How many people live there and what is the age distribution?

 

  • Is it a young or an old country?

 

  • Socio economic levels? Income inequality? More equal?

 

  • Diverse population? Are there ethnicities present that are surprising to me?

 

  • Poverty: low income vs. low education? How many old people, young people, middle aged people, seem to be homeless?

 

  • How are people aging? Good, bad? Life expectancy?

 

  • Perception of Aging: Stereotypes? How are the older old treated? Valued, disrespected, idolized? Observe day-to-day interactions with people.

 

  • Safety: What is the safety system like? Comment on police corruption and how that affects total health. Do I feel safe being there? Would an elderly person feel safe? Would a child? What about as a tourist?

 

  • Gender Components: what is life like for men vs. women? How does safety play into this? Objectification of women? What is it like for older men vs. older women?

 

  • Race Ethnicity: Perceptions? How does race affect life day to day and as you age? Black vs. White- privilege? Presence of past apartheid laws and how that affects life today.

 

  • Living conditions of elderly and younger people: Nursing homes? Caregivers? With families? Do younger people live in the city? With family?

 

  • Neighborhood conditions: Plays in with safety as well. Opportunities for physical activities? Green space? Access to clean water and good food?

 

  • Public Transportation: What is it like? How accessible is it for people of all ages? What about if you are disabled? Is it safe? It is affordable?

 

  • The value of nutrition and wellness. Is Cape Town a “well” city? Does it foster a wellness lifestyle? Exercise?

 

  • The Health Care System: What is it like? How is it constructed? How accessible is it for a traveler? For a young person? For an old person? Trust in the healthcare system? What is a South African doctor like? How hard is it to get medication?

 

  • Difference of Life in Urban vs. Rural areas: Townships!! Older people in these two areas. Talk about this when I do my homestay in a Township. Vast difference?

 

  • Food: Accessibility? Markets? Best cuisine? Health value? What is part of the daily diet? For a younger person vs. older person?

 

 

  • Value of Education: Timeline? Young vs. Old? Education system? Do older people go back to school? Do younger people not go to school and how would that affect their future careers? Overall perception of the education system? Experience at UCT?

 

  • Employment: How is work structured throughout the life course? When do most people retire? When do most people enter the workforce? How is a sabbatical perceived? What is retirement like? Is there such a thing as pensions in SA? Is there more of an emphasis of a “second half” of life after you retire?

 

  • Trends In Economy: Rand vs. Dollar. Price of Life

 

  • Government: What is it like? Corrupt? How do they work to benefit health and aging? How do they not? Leadership?

 

  • Public Health: How is it? How public health interventions can occur? What is needed?

 

  • Music: Presence of it in daily life? Pop culture?
